FACT SHEET
First organized in 1990 by Gregory S. Shaffer, Camp Heebee was born from the desire to organize a weekend campout where friends and family could come together to enjoy the outdoors and each other. Camp Heebee is more than just a camping trip, it's a fellowship and the building of community. Camp Heebee activities include hiking, crafts, good conversation, relaxing, trips to nearby outlet malls, water activities (swimming, canoeing, sailing), cooperative evening meals, and group campfires.
The
MissionThe mission of Camp Heebeejeebeewebehavin'fun is to provide a safe, supportive camping experience where all campers -- young and old -- can renew themselves in the beauty of the outdoors, while enjoying old friends and making new friends.
The
ObjectivesCamp Heebee objectives are that: 1) a greater appreciation for the group camping experience is fostered; 2) all Heebee campers become physically, mentally and spiritually renewed by the re-creation that takes place during camp; 3) young campers have a chance to enjoy the camping experience and have positive interactions with adults and 4) that adult campers are provided a respite from the day to day pace of life in a natural outdoor setting.
The
NameWhile the details of how the name was selected have been lost over time, this much we do know. The name was conceived in late Spring 1990, prior to the first Camp Heebee. Shaff, Big Al, Lol, Yo Desch, and Captain Uvula were discussing possible names in the Vallejo Health Education Office of the Solano County Health Department. In a fit of creativity, words and sounds were being bandied about. The next thing we all knew something about Havingfun and the Heebeejeebee phrase had filled the air. The rest is history. Originally the spelling had "weebee." This was changed in 1993 to "webe" by Dennis McKee as part of the Camp's overall image campaign. As of this writing, the rules for use of the apostrophe in "havin'fun," has not been clarified, therefore either version is acceptable. Likewise, the shortened name Camp Heebee is acceptable.
